Tantallon win can't stop Gullane claiming sixth League Title
There was heartbreak for Tantallon in the league title decider on Sunday, when they inflicted a first defeat of the campaign on Gullane but fell short of claiming the league title.
Needing a minimum 3½-1½ win, the home team led for most of the day in the top three ties, with little to separate the teams in match 4 and Gullane in control at the bottom. And when Valdemar Hundeboll holed bravely from 10 feet to move 1 ahead on the 16th the pendulum seemed to have swung Tantallon’s way. His teammates in the three matches ahead had each boarded the seventeenth tee two up, and when he and partner Scott Young then halved the seventeenth hole, Tantallon had one hand on the league trophy.
But Scott Walker and Stuart Roberts refused to lie down for the visitors, clawing their way back from 4 down after 11 to take their match down the 18th. And when Walker holed on the home green for a birdie that home pair John Stewart and Nick Peoples couldn’t match, it was down to Young and Hundeboll to hold on for the league title. In the event they weren’t able to match their opponents’ closing birdie either, and fell tantalisingly short.
On a day of slim pickings for the visitors it was fitting that their skipper John Clelland was able to clinch the title for his team in the final moments of an enthralling league season, extending Gullane’s run of success to six years.
Elsewhere North Berwick recorded a seventh successive win (including six away matches) since Christmas to lift the 2nd Division title, whilst Kilspindie’s win at the Glen was enough to secure promotion.
With the league programme completed, attention turns to next Sunday’s Cup Final featuring a clash between the Division 1 and Division 2 champions. North Berwick make their fourth appearance in the final but have yet to record a win, whilst Gullane will be trying to complete a sixth consecutive League and Cup double.
